Microsoft discontinues development of WSUS: What does this mean for your organization?

Windows Server Update Service Deprication

Microsoft has announced it is stopping development of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This means that no more new features or enhancements will be added to WSUS. However, current functionality will be retained and updates will still be published through the WSUS channel.

What Now?

Although WSUS will still be available in the coming years and is also still part of Windows Server 2025, Microsoft recommends that companies move to modern Cloud-based solutions. This fits within their vision of simplified Windows management from the Cloud. However, this does not present an immediate problem for your organization, as you still have the necessary time to switch to a Microsoft or non-Microsoft alternative.

Impact of quitting WSUS

For organizations currently managing their environments with WSUS, replacing WSUS could have a huge impact.

  • Turnaround time: Replacing WSUS for another package requires a lot of research, and after implementation, the entire management department needs to learn to use the product.
  • Cost: WSUS was part of Windows Server and was therefore “free” to use. So the replacement package always costs money, this can be purchase but also package with subscription models exist.

Alternative

Whereas WSUS is only used by most organizations to update products from, alternative packages are capable of keeping up with other software packages as well. So switching to a different solution does not have to have a negative impact on your organization, but can also provide a more manageable environment.

Conclusion

Microsoft stopping the development of WSUS is not immediately a huge risk, the advice is to start looking at alternatives in the near future. If you have any questions following this article, please get in touch.
