After a long wait, Microsoft is finally offering their own backup service for their Microsoft 365 products. Since July 31, Microsoft has started making this new service available. With Microsoft 365 Backup, you can now easily backup OneDrive, Exchange Online and SharePoint. Where before you were dependent on third-party services, you can now use Microsoft’s own services directly, without the need for an additional license.
Advantages
- Fast backup and restore times:
Because the data is within Microsoft’s trusted environment, it is possible to backup and restore data faster. According to Microsoft, especially with large amounts of data, it can even be up to 20 times faster than other solutions. - Easy recovery of SharePoint and OneDrive:
The service offers complete reliability in restoring SharePoint sites and OneDrive accounts. This means you can restore both the site and OneDrive to their exact status at specific earlier times through a rollback operation. - Full or partial Exchange mailbox(section) restore:
It is possible to restore an entire mailbox or to restore only one specific item by searching for changed or deleted items. This gives users the flexibility to restore only what is needed. - Easy to implement:
With the advent of this service, it is now easy for small business owners to ensure backup. Previously, small businesses often relied on third parties to secure their data, but that is now a thing of the past.
Cons
- No Teams Chat backup:
Unfortunately, it is not possible to back up Teams Chat conversations. If this is desirable, you are still dependent on third-party solutions. - Maximum retention period of 1 year:
The maximum retention period for stored data is set at one year, and this term cannot be adjusted at this time.
Requirements
No additional license is required to use the Microsoft 365 Backup service. However, you do need to have a pay-as-you-go subscription linked to the Microsoft Syntex services.
Cost
The cost for this service is based on the actual storage used. These are $0.15 per GB per month. Microsoft has provided a price calculator that allows you to calculate the expected monthly cost. This calculator takes into account several factors that you need to enter, and then the price per month is displayed. The latest version of the price calculator can be downloaded here , and detailed information on how to use it is also available.
Conclusion
With the advent of Microsoft 365 Backup, it is finally possible for customers to easily and quickly backup and restore their Microsoft 365 data. Especially for small business owners, who often forget to back up OneDrive, Exchange Online and SharePoint, or who rely on third parties, this offers an excellent solution.
